Throughout history, individuals have notoriously been subject to higher powers. This form of ownership of an individual exemplifies itself in slavery, indentured servitude, and even in the governmental systems that hold reign over the general population. The ability of one person to rule over another arises from both moral and physical inequalities. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, a prominent Genevan philosopher, attempts to uncover the origin of inequality. In The Second Discourse, Rousseau systematically dissects the movement of humans away from their natural state and attempts to explain how inequality is derived. Shakespeare’s The Tempest tells the tale of a usurped Duke, Prospero, who suffers a life of exile on a mystical island.†¦show more content†¦Once upon the island, Prospero claims the property as his own. This concept draws similarity to Rousseau’s idea on the formation of civil society in which he states, â€Å"The first person who, having fenced off a plot of ground, took it into his head to say this is mine and found people simple enough to believe him, was the true founder of civil society† (Rousseau 141). Coinciding with Rousseau’s description, Prospero creates a society of his own. When Prospero and Miranda arrive on the island, its only inhabitants are Caliban and Ariel. Despite the fact that the island is currently inhabited by others, Prospero proceeds to claim the island as his own. Prospero forces Caliban into servitude and though Caliban feels used and mistreated, he has little choice but to submit to Prospero’s demands. Prospero’s negative behavior forces Caliban to slander Prospero as an invader of his home. Caliban proclaims, â€Å"This island’s mine by Sycorax, my mother,/ Which thou tak’st from me† (I.II. 396-397). While utilizing magical endeavors, Prospero exhibits his unequal power over Caliban which further emphasizes the inequality of the island’s inhabitants. Prospero, a dominant character in The Tempest, possesses the ability to relinquish his own powers. In an attempt to regain his throne and title as the Duke of Milan, Prospero and his servant, Ariel, conjure up a storm with the hope of marooning the European lords, Antonio, Alonso, and Ferdinand on his island.
